 A Brief History of Nando’s
 Nando’s Chicken got its start in 1987. The first restaurant was located in Rosettenville in Johannesburg, South Africa. Even though we have come a long way, we still remember our humble beginnings.
 
 Nando’s story really began several centuries ago, when Portuguese explorers first set sail for the East. Upon landing on African shores, they were in introduced to the African Bird’s Eye Chilli, otherwise known as PERi-PERi. A spice like no other, the locals used it to create a unique sauce that fired their bellies and ignited passion in their souls.
 
 That same flavour inspired Fernando Duarte to invite his friend Robbie Brozin to a join him at a humble Portuguese eatery in the heart of Rosettenville, South Africa in 1987. After just one bite they both knew it was a taste that had to be shared.
 
 From the beginning, these two founders had great ambitions for their small business. After years passed in a hot kitchen, and riding on the back of their food’s growing reputation, Robbie and Fernando opened a second restaurant. Then they opened another. And another. Always flying by the seat of their pants, taking risks, and feeling as though they could fail at any moment.
 
 From the very beginning, the founders wanted Nando’s to be more than chicken and profit. Their slogan in the early days was “have fun and then make money” but always in the right way, giving people opportunities and making a positive impact on their lives.
 
 The rest is history! Today, you can find Nando’s restaurants and our addictive grocery range right around the world. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or an old friend, we can’t wait to welcome you!

 While each of our restaurants looks different, all of them share the commonality of a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and delicious food. Earthy textures and colours reflect our sunny Afro-Portuguese heritage and on the walls, you’ll see original South African art. There are surprises and delights in every restaurant.
